What Does the Name Stiorra Mean?
Stiorra has no securely established etymology, so its meaning is uncertain. No Old English or Old Norse word, and no earlier personal name, has been identified as the source it comes from.
Its form fits the naming style of Anglo-Saxon and Norse England. The spelling uses the vowel digraph "io," which is characteristic of Anglian (Mercian and Northumbrian) Old English, where West Saxon writes "eo." That places the name's appearance within an Old English writing tradition, but it does not by itself supply a meaning.
Stiorra Name History & Origins
Stiorra is the name of a character in Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories series, which begins with The Last Kingdom and follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg through the wars between the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and the Norse and Danish settlers of northern England. Stiorra is Uhtred's daughter by his wife Gisela, and in the later novels she marries Sigtryggr, the Norse ruler of Eoforwic (York). The television adaptation of the series also uses the name.
Cornwell took the personal names in the series from Old English, Old Norse, and Latin sources of the period. The letter pattern of Stiorra follows the Anglian Old English convention in which "io" stands where West Saxon has "eo"; the same feature appears in the Anglian form stiorra of the word steorra ("star") and in pairs such as liornian and leornian ("to learn"). That stiorra is a common noun, not a recorded personal name, and nothing beyond the identical spelling links it to this name.
