What Does the Name Sorin Mean?
Sorin is a Romanian masculine given name meaning 'sunny' or 'of the sun.' It comes from the Romanian noun soare ('sun'), which descends from Latin sol, solem, with the suffix -in. The suffix adds a diminutive or descriptive force, so the literal sense is 'little sun' or 'sun-like'; the customary English meaning is 'sunny.' Romanian forms masculine names this way from common words, as in Florin (from floare, 'flower') and Dorin (from dor, 'longing'). The feminine counterpart is Sorina. Sorin is not related to the Scandinavian name Søren, which comes from Severinus.
Sorin Name History & Origins
Sorin is a vernacular Romanian given name rather than one inherited from a saint's name. It belongs to a group of Romanian names formed from common nouns with the suffix -in; Florin and Dorin are the closest parallels. The base word soare is the ordinary Romanian word for 'sun.' The name is used in Romania and Moldova and by Romanian-speaking communities elsewhere. Its feminine form, Sorina, follows the same pattern. The similar-looking Danish and Norwegian name Søren developed separately from the Latin Severinus and has no historical connection to Sorin.
