What Does the Name Solar Mean?
Solar means "of the sun" or "relating to the sun." It comes from Latin solaris, an adjective formed from sol (genitive solis), the Latin noun for "sun." English adopted the adjective as solar, and the given name is a word name: it uses that English adjective directly as a personal name rather than deriving from an older biblical, saint's, or royal name. The meaning is literal; ideas of light, warmth, or energy are extensions of the basic sense "of the sun," not separate etymologies.
Solar Name History & Origins
Latin sol was the ordinary noun for the sun, and solaris was the adjective for things belonging to or coming from the sun. In Roman religion, Sol was also a sun god, but the adjective solaris comes from the common noun, not from a personal name. English has used solar as an adjective since the Middle English period, in phrases such as solar eclipse, solar calendar, and solar system.
As a given name, Solar belongs to the modern English pattern of vocabulary names, in which an ordinary word is adopted as a personal name. It is distinct from Sol in its Hebrew-derived use as a short form of Solomon, even though the forms look alike. In Spanish and Portuguese, solar also appears as a word and surname; the adjective there comes from Latin solaris, while a separate noun solar meaning "lot" or "ancestral estate" comes from Latin solum, "soil" or "ground," and is not related to the sun.
