What Does the Name Sol Mean?

Sol is used in English mainly as a short form of Solomon, a name from Hebrew Shlomo (שְׁלֹמֹה), which rests on the root shalom, "peace"; in this use Sol means "peace." The name has a second, unrelated origin in Latin sōl, "the sun" - the word the Romans used both for the sun and for the god of the sun - which passed into Spanish, Portuguese, and other Romance languages as an everyday word and as a given name. The Old Norse name Sól, the sun goddess of Norse myth, belongs to the same ancient "sun" word family as Latin sōl: both go back to a Proto-Indo-European root for the sun, though the Norse name reached Scandinavia by a Germanic path rather than through Latin. The Hebrew and the "sun" names look alike but share no origin.

Sol Name History & Origins

As an English given name, Sol is recorded chiefly as a familiar form of Solomon. In Jewish communities in Britain, the United States, and elsewhere, men whose full name was Solomon - or a Yiddish form of it - were commonly called Sol in daily life, and Sol also stood on its own as a Yiddish name (Yiddish: סאָל). The same shortening of the biblical name into a one-syllable everyday form occurred in a number of European languages.

The Latin word sōl gave the name an independent life. In Rome, Sol was the sun god, and the emperor Aurelian promoted the cult of Sol Invictus, the "Unconquered Sun," in the 270s CE; a festival of the sun was later kept on December 25. In Spanish and Portuguese, sol still means "sun," and Sol has been used as a given name in those languages, frequently for girls and often in combinations such as María Sol.

The Norse goddess Sól appears in Old Norse sources written down in the 13th century, including poems of the Poetic Edda. There she is the daughter of Mundilfari and sister of Máni, the moon, and she drives the horses that pull the sun across the sky while a wolf pursues her. Her name is the Germanic "sun" word, related to Latin sōl but not to Solomon; the two traditions should not be merged.
