What Does the Name Skarlette Mean?
Skarlette is a modern variant spelling of Scarlett, a name taken from the English word scarlet, which names a bright, vivid red. The color word entered English from Old French escarlate, and that came from Medieval Latin scarlata, the term for a costly dyed cloth. The deeper origin of the word is uncertain: it is often traced to Persian saqerlāt or Arabic siqillāt, and some connect it to Latin sigillatus, meaning "decorated with small figures," which described a patterned fabric. Because the earlier word may have referred to a dye, a cloth, or a color, the literal sense of the root is not fully settled, but the meaning of the name in English is the color red at its brightest.
Skarlette Name History & Origins
The name behind Skarlette is Scarlett, which began in the English-speaking world as a surname and only later became a first name. That surname was occupational: it identified a maker or seller of scarlet cloth, from the Old French word escarlate. Families bearing the surname Scarlett are recorded in England from the Middle Ages onward.
Scarlett came into use as a girl's given name during the 1800s, when English speakers commonly adopted surnames as first names. Margaret Mitchell used it for the character Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1936), and the 1939 film adaptation made the name widely familiar. That literary and film use is frequently cited in discussions of the name's following, but it followed a name that was already in use rather than creating it.
Skarlette is a respelling of Scarlett in which the opening Sc- is written Sk-. Writing a k in place of a c is a modern pattern in English naming, and the spelling here also extends the ending to -lette, which resembles the French feminine ending -ette. The spelling does not change the name's origin or meaning; it is a stylistic variant of Scarlett.
