What Does the Name Siloe Mean?

Siloe means 'Sent.' It is the Latin form - used in the Vulgate and in the Douay-Rheims English Bible - of the biblical place name Shiloah, the pool and water channel in Jerusalem. The Hebrew name is traditionally tied to the root shalach, 'to send,' which suits a conduit that sends water along it. The Gospel of John gives the pool's name in Greek as Siloam and adds the gloss 'which is translated, Sent.' The meaning therefore belongs to the place name from the start; Siloe does not have a separate personal etymology of its own.

Siloe Name History & Origins

The Pool of Siloam lay at the southern end of Jerusalem, supplied by the Gihon spring through a tunnel cut through solid rock. The Hebrew Bible speaks of 'the waters of Shiloah that flow gently' (Isaiah 8:6) and of 'the pool of Shelah' beside the king's garden (Nehemiah 3:15). The tunnel is credited in the Bible to King Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:20; 2 Chronicles 32:30), and a Hebrew inscription inside it records the moment when two crews of diggers met underground. In the New Testament the pool appears as Siloam: Jesus sends a blind man there to wash (John 9), and Luke mentions a tower at Siloam that fell and killed eighteen people (Luke 13:4). Latin translations of the Bible render the name Siloe, and that is the spelling carried into the Douay-Rheims English translation. The same form, often written Siloé, is also used as a personal name in Spanish-speaking countries, but that given-name use has its own later history and is far less documented than the ancient place name.
