What Does the Name Sigurd Mean?

Sigurd means "guardian of victory" and comes from Old Norse Sigurðr, a compound of sigr "victory" and varðr "guardian" or "warder." The second element is related to English ward. The similar German name Siegfried is a different compound, from words meaning "victory" and "peace," though the two names became linked in medieval heroic legend because the Norse hero Sigurðr is the counterpart of the continental Siegfried.

Sigurd Name History & Origins

Old Norse Sigurðr is attested in medieval Scandinavian literature, especially in the Poetic Edda and Völsunga saga. Its most famous bearer in those sources is the hero Sigurðr Fáfnisbani, "Sigurd the Slayer of Fáfnir," who kills the dragon Fáfnir and becomes part of the tragic Völsung cycle. This figure corresponds to Siegfried in German tradition, but the names themselves have different origins.

The name was also borne by historical Scandinavian rulers, including Sigurd I Magnusson of Norway, known as Sigurd Jorsalfare ("the Crusader") for his early twelfth-century journey to Jerusalem. From Old Norse Sigurðr come the modern forms Icelandic Sigurður, Faroese Sigurð, and Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish Sigurd. A notable English literary use is William Morris's 1876 poem The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Nibelungs.
