What Does the Name Shervin Mean?
Shervin (Persian: شروین) is a Persian masculine given name whose meaning is not securely documented. A widely repeated suggestion links it to Persian sarv, "cypress," but that is a proposed association rather than a documented derivation, and the element that would follow sarv is not explained. It is distinct from the Persian name Shirin, "sweet," and from Sarvin, a name actually built on sarv; similar sound does not establish a shared origin.
Shervin Name History & Origins
Shervin belongs to the Iranian name stock of the Caspian provinces. It is recorded in medieval accounts of Tabaristan and Mazandaran in the form Sharwin (also written Shervin or Sharveen), where it was borne by rulers of the Bavandid line, whose house also used names such as Qarin and Shahriyar. This attestation places the name in the older Iranian-speaking culture of the Caspian highlands, well before the modern state of Iran.
The name has remained in use in Iran and is written شروین in the Persian alphabet. Because no early source explains its components, translations that give it a fixed meaning reflect later interpretation rather than documented etymology.
