What Does the Name Shep Mean?
Shep is an English short form of the occupational name Shepherd (also spelled Shepard), meaning "sheep herder." The parent word goes back to Old English scēaphierde, built from scēap, "sheep," and hierde, "herder" or "guardian." The Middle English form was schepherde. Shep is a clipped pronunciation of that word rather than a separate root, so its meaning is simply the occupation of tending sheep.
Shep Name History & Origins
The word for a sheep herder became a common English surname in the Middle Ages, appearing in forms such as Shepherd, Shepard, Sheppard, and Shepperd. From these surnames came the shortened spoken form Shep, used first as a familiar nickname for a person whose family name was Shepherd or Shepard, and later as a given name in its own right, chiefly in the United States.
The nickname pattern is visible in the American television journalist David Shepard Smith, who goes by Shep from his middle name. As a first name, Shep is usually given directly today, or as a short form of Shepard. Its link to the parent name rather than to an unrelated root distinguishes it from similar-sounding names of different origin.
