What Does the Name Seychelle Mean?
Seychelle is a feminine given name used chiefly in English-speaking countries, formed from the name of the Seychelles, the island country in the Indian Ocean. The place name is French in origin: it comes from the surname Séchelles, borne by Jean Moreau de Séchelles, a French finance minister of the 18th century. Because the given name is a transferred place name, it has no independent vocabulary meaning - its sense is simply "of the Seychelles" or "connected with the Seychelles." The deeper etymology of the French surname itself is uncertain; it is a family name rather than an ordinary French word.
Seychelle Name History & Origins
The Seychelles islands were named by the French in 1756, when France took formal possession of the group, in honor of Jean Moreau de Séchelles, who was then serving as Controller General of Finances under Louis XV. The spelling Seychelle as a personal name is an English rendering of that island and surname. It belongs to the broad category of place names adopted as given names, and its French-derived ending in -elle makes it look like the larger family of feminine names such as Michelle, Rochelle, Danielle, and Gabrielle, though those names have separate origins and no historical connection to it. Seychelle remains uncommon as a given name and is not tied to any single documented source or event.
