What Does the Name Sevan Mean?

Sevan is an Armenian given name taken from Lake Sevan, the largest lake in Armenia and in the Caucasus region. Because the personal name simply repeats a place name, it means "of Lake Sevan" or "from Lake Sevan." The lake's own name is not securely explained. The derivation most often repeated reads it as Armenian sev (սև, "black") plus van (վան, "monastery"), giving "black monastery," an allusion to the monastery of Sevanavank beside the lake. That is a traditional explanation rather than a documented etymology, and the original sense of the name remains uncertain.

Sevan Name History & Origins

Lake Sevan lies in the Armenian highlands at about 1,900 meters above sea level. Greek and Roman geographers knew it as Lychnitis, and older Armenian texts call it the Sea of Gegham (Գեղամա ծով). A Turkic name, Gokcha, from a word for "bluish," was also used in the nineteenth century, before Sevan became the standard name.

The form Sewan (Սևան) appears in medieval Armenian sources. On what was then an island in the lake - now a peninsula - the monastery of Sevanavank was founded in 874 and took its name from the lake.

Armenian parents have often drawn given names from the country's places and landmarks, and Sevan belongs to that group, alongside names such as Ararat and Nairi. It is used in Armenia and in Armenian communities abroad. The lakeside town of Sevan, a resort in Gegharkunik Province, and the lake's standing as Armenia's main body of water have kept the name familiar.

The Armenian name is distinct from the Hebrew name Sivan, a month of the Jewish calendar; the two are not related.
