What Does the Name Serafin Mean?
Serafin is a masculine given name derived from the biblical Seraphim, the six-winged heavenly beings described in Isaiah's vision. The Hebrew word seraphim (שְׂרָפִים) is the plural of saraph (שָׂרָף), which is related to the root saraph (שָׂרַף), "to burn." The name is therefore traditionally explained as "burning one" or "fiery one." In Christian usage, the seraphim are angels, so the name also carries the later sense "seraph" or "angel." The form Serafin comes through Latin Seraphinus, a personal name based on the Hebrew term, and is used in Spanish (often Serafín), Polish, and other European languages; the Italian form is Serafino.
Serafin Name History & Origins
The Hebrew term seraphim appears in the book of Isaiah, where the seraphim are described as standing above the divine throne and having six wings. In later Christian angelology, influenced by works such as the Celestial Hierarchy attributed to Pseudo-Dionysius, the seraphim were ranked as the highest choir of angels. From devotion to these angels, personal names based on the term emerged in medieval Christian Europe.
The Latin Seraphinus and its vernacular forms gave rise to the Italian Serafino, the Spanish Serafín, and the Polish Serafin. The Italian Capuchin friar Serafino da Montegranaro (1540 - 1604), later canonized as a saint, is one documented bearer of the Italian form. In Polish, Serafin has been used as a given name, and the related Slavic form Seraphim (Russian Серафим) is especially associated with Saint Seraphim of Sarov (1759 - 1833). The feminine forms Serafina and Seraphina developed alongside the masculine name.
