What Does the Name Seline Mean?

Seline is a spelling used for two older names that have separate origins. As a form of the Greek Selēnē (Σελήνη), it means "moon," the word the Greeks used for the moon and for the goddess who personified it. That Greek word is often connected with selas, meaning "light" or "brightness," but the link is not certain, and some reference works treat the name as older than Greek, or pre-Greek.

Seline also stands as a form of the French Céline and the English Selina, both of which come from the Latin feminine name Caelina, formed on caelum, "sky" or "heaven." On that derivation the meaning is "heavenly" or "of the sky." The two explanations belong to different languages and are not related to each other; which one lies behind a given modern use of Seline is usually not recorded.

Seline Name History & Origins

Selēnē was the Greek goddess of the moon, named in Hesiod's Theogony as a daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia and a sister of Helios (the sun) and Eos (the dawn). Greek myth tells of her love for the shepherd Endymion, and the later Romans identified her with their own moon goddess, Luna. The name belonged first to the goddess; forms such as Selena, Selina, and Seline came into European naming much later.

The Latin name Caelina is recorded as a Roman woman's name, a feminine form related to Caelinus and to caelum, "heaven." Passing through French, it became Céline. French tradition names a Saint Céline of Laon as the mother of Saint Remigius, the bishop of Reims who died around 533, though the surviving accounts of her life are hagiographic rather than documentary. The English form Selina was in use by the 1600s; Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon (1707 - 1791), was a well-known bearer.

Seline is Céline written without the accent, and it is also used as a variant of Selene and Selina. It appears as a given name in English-speaking countries and in parts of Europe, and it is found as a surname as well. Because one spelling can stand for more than one older name, the derivation of a particular Seline cannot always be recovered from the record.
