What Does the Name Seini Mean?

Seini is the Fijian and Tongan form of the English name Jane. Jane descends from Old French Jehanne, the feminine of Jehan, from medieval Latin Johanna, the feminine of Johannes, and ultimately from Greek Iōannēs and the Hebrew name Yochanan. That Hebrew name joins a form of the divine name (Yahweh) with a root meaning "to be gracious," so its literal sense is "Yahweh is gracious." The customary English wording, and the meaning Seini carries, is "God is gracious."

Seini has no independent etymology of its own; its meaning comes entirely from Jane, of which it is a regional form.

Seini Name History & Origins

Seini belongs to the group of biblical and European names that Fijian and Tongan speakers reshaped from English in the nineteenth century, when Wesleyan Methodist missionaries settled in Tonga from the 1820s and in Fiji from the 1830s and began producing scripture, hymns, and school texts in the local languages. In Tongan, the borrowed names typically show s where English has j or sh: John became Sione, George became Siaosi, James became Sēmisi, Charlotte became Salote, and Jane became Sēini. Because words in these languages ordinarily end in a vowel, the closing n of Jane took on a final i, giving Seini. Tongan also writes the name with a macron, Sēini, to mark the long first vowel.

In Fiji, Seini is a familiar woman's given name, and in Tonga Sēini is used as a girl's name alongside other adapted forms such as Mele and ʻAna. The name is unrelated to the Romanian town of Seini or to the French river Seine, which merely look similar.
