What Does the Name Scotia Mean?

Scotia is the Latin name for Scotland, literally meaning "land of the Scots." It is formed from Latin Scotus, "a Scot" - the same word used in medieval Latin for an Irishman - plus the place-name suffix -ia, which also appears in Hibernia (Ireland) and Britannia. So the literal sense is "territory of the Scoti." The further origin of Scotus and its plural Scoti is uncertain; one suggestion connects it to an Old Irish word such as scoth ("flower," "choice"), but this is not settled.

Scotia Name History & Origins

In classical Latin, Scotia did not mean Scotland. The Scoti were Irish, and early Latin writers used Scotia for Ireland itself. When groups from northern Ireland - the people of Dál Riata - established themselves in what is now western Scotland, the term Scoti came to be applied to them, and over the medieval period Scotia shifted northward to name the territory beyond the Firth of Forth and eventually the whole kingdom. By around the eleventh century Scotia was the standard Latin name for the kingdom of Scotland. The country's own Gaelic name is Alba.

The Latin form survives in modern place names. Nova Scotia, "New Scotland," is the Canadian province named in the seventeenth century, and the Scotia Sea near Antarctica takes its name from a Scottish expedition ship called Scotia. Scotia is also used occasionally as a feminine given name in English-speaking countries, particularly in Scotland and Canada, taken directly from the Latin word for the country.
