What Does the Name Sati Mean?
Sati is a feminine name of Sanskrit origin meaning "true" or "virtuous." It comes from the Sanskrit word satī, the feminine form of the adjective sat, "true, real, good," which is built on the verb root as-, "to be." Taken literally, the word means something like "she who is true" or "the true one," and in ordinary use it described a faithful, virtuous, or devoted woman.
The name belongs mainly to South Asia, where it is used in India and Nepal among Hindu families and appears in related spellings such as Sathi. Two look-alike names are unrelated: the Egyptian goddess Satis (also Satet) of Elephantine has a name from a different language, and the Pali Buddhist term sati, "mindfulness, recollection," comes from Sanskrit smṛti and is a separate word.
Sati Name History & Origins
In Hindu tradition, Sati is the daughter of the god-king Daksha and the wife of Shiva, and the story of her death is told in several Puranas, including the Bhagavata Purana. Daksha held a great sacrificial rite and deliberately left Shiva out. Sati went to the ceremony anyway and, after her father spoke contemptuously of her husband, she died in the sacrificial fire. Shiva's grief and rage became one of the central episodes of Shaiva mythology: as he carried her body through the world, the places where its parts fell became the Shakti Peethas, the goddess shrines of the subcontinent. In later tradition Sati is reborn as Parvati and is worshipped among the forms of the great goddess.
The same Sanskrit word satī also named the custom in which a widow immolated herself on her husband's funeral pyre, and the woman who did so. That usage grew out of the older sense of a virtuous, faithful wife rather than out of the myth alone. The earliest frequently cited epigraphic trace is a pillar inscription at Eran in central India, dated to 510 CE, which commemorates a woman who died with her husband. The practice was outlawed in British India in 1829 under Governor-General Lord William Bentinck, at the urging of the reformer Ram Mohan Roy.
As a personal name, Sati is given chiefly in India and Nepal and keeps the older sense of truthfulness and devotion; the mythological and the historical associations of the word remain tied to it.
