What Does the Name Sarp Mean?
Sarp is a Turkish masculine given name. It comes from the Turkish adjective sarp, meaning "steep," "rugged," or "hard to pass." Its deeper etymology is uncertain: it is sometimes derived from Arabic صَعْب (ṣaʿb), "difficult, hard," and sometimes treated as a native Turkic word. The name's established sense is the Turkish one - a steep or rugged place, and by extension something difficult or severe.
Sarp Name History & Origins
The Turkish adjective sarp is old enough to appear in Ottoman Turkish writing as صارپ (sarp), where it described steep, hard-to-cross ground and severe or difficult things. In modern Turkish it remains current in phrases such as sarp kayalık ("steep rock") and sarp yokuş ("steep slope").
In Turkey, Sarp is used as a masculine given name and also appears as a surname. It has no single association with a saint, ruler, or literary work; its use rests on the ordinary Turkish adjective.
The word also appears in Turkish place names, including the Sarp border crossing on the Black Sea coast at the Georgian border. That is a geographic use of the word, separate from the personal name's history.
