What Does the Name Sarit Mean?
Sarit is a Hebrew feminine name generally understood to mean "little princess." It is built from the name Sarah (שָׂרָה) plus the ending -it, a very common Hebrew feminine suffix that often carries a diminutive or affectionate force in personal names. Sarah goes back to the Hebrew word sar (שַׂר), "prince, ruler, chieftain"; the feminine form sarah means "princess." So the literal sense of Sarit is a small or dear princess rather than a royal title used on its own. Sarit is not the same name as Sarai (שָׂרַי), the earlier form of Sarah in Genesis, even though the two look alike. A separate, unrelated word, Sanskrit sarit (सरित्), means "river" or "stream" and stands behind the Indian feminine name Sarita; that is a different origin and is not the source of the Hebrew name Sarit.
Sarit Name History & Origins
Sarit belongs to the large group of Hebrew names made with the feminine ending -it, the same pattern found in Ronit, Dalit, Yafit, Orit, and Sigalit. Names of this type spread as Hebrew was revived and modernized as a spoken language from the late nineteenth century onward, first in Palestine and later in the State of Israel, when older biblical names were reworked and new ones were coined from Hebrew roots.
Its parent name, Sarah, is the biblical matriarch and wife of Abraham. Genesis first calls her Sarai and then records the change of her name to Sarah (Genesis 17:15), and the name has long been read as "princess," from sar, "prince" or "ruler." Because Sarah stayed one of the most widely used Jewish women's names in diaspora communities, shorter, softened forms built on it had a familiar base to develop from. Sarit is used by Hebrew speakers in Israel and by Jewish families elsewhere, and in English-speaking countries it is sometimes spelled Sareet. The Israeli singer Sarit Hadad is a well-known bearer of the name.
