What Does the Name Sarae Mean?
Sarae is best understood as a spelling variant of Sarah, a name from biblical Hebrew. The Hebrew form שָׂרָה (Sarah) means "princess" or "noblewoman"; it rests on the root that also yields שַׂר (sar), "prince" or "ruler." The closely related biblical form Sarai (שָׂרַי) belongs to the same figure, and its exact sense is debated - some explain it as "my princess," with a possessive ending, while others treat it as a dialect form or connect it with a root meaning "to contend." Sarae carries the customary meaning of the parent name, "princess," and differs from Sarah and Sara mainly in its final vowel and spelling rather than in sense.
Sarae Name History & Origins
Sarah is the name given in the book of Genesis to the wife of Abraham. She is first called Sarai (שָׂרַי), and at Genesis 17:15 her name is changed to Sarah (שָׂרָה). The Hebrew name entered Greek as Σάρρα (Sarra) and Latin as Sara, and from those forms it spread through Christian Europe. English settled on two common spellings, Sarah and, without the final h, Sara.
The spelling Sarae adds a final -e to Sara and adopts the Latin-style ending -ae, a convention long used when rendering Semitic and biblical names into European languages. English use of Sarae as a given name is a later spelling variation on Sara rather than a separate name with an independent etymology of its own.
