What Does the Name Salahuddin Mean?
Salahuddin is an Arabic name meaning "righteousness of the faith" or "rectitude of the religion." It is a compound of the Arabic word ṣalāḥ (صلاح), meaning "righteousness, soundness, or welfare," and al-dīn (الدين), meaning "the religion" or "the faith." In the joined form Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn, the definite article al- is often assimilated in pronunciation and transliterated as ud- or ad-, giving the spelling Salahuddin as well as forms such as Salah ad-Din and Salahudeen. The literal sense is "righteousness of the faith"; the name is not a statement about a person's character but a religious honorific that became a personal name.
Salahuddin Name History & Origins
The name is an Arabic compound that was used as an honorific title (laqab). Its most famous bearer was Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb (1137/38 - 1193), a Kurdish commander who founded the Ayyubid dynasty and became sultan of Egypt and Syria. European chronicles rendered his title in Latin as Saladinus and in English as Saladin, the form still commonly used for him. His given name was Yūsuf; Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn was the honorific by which he became widely known. The title was also used by other medieval Muslim rulers and scholars. Today Salahuddin is a personal name in Arabic-speaking countries and in other Muslim regions, including Turkey (as Selahaddin), Iran (as Salah od-Din), and South Asia. The spelling Salahuddin reflects the joined pronunciation of al-Dīn after the first element, while Salah ad-Din and Salahudeen are alternative transliterations. The Western form Saladin is not a separate name but a European contraction of the same Arabic title.
