What Does the Name Sahib Mean?
Sahib goes back to Arabic ṣāḥib (صاحب), a noun from the root ṣ-ḥ-b, whose basic sense is keeping company or accompanying. Its literal meaning is companion or associate; from "the one who is with a thing" it also came to mean owner, possessor, or holder. In Arabic and in the languages that borrowed the word, it doubles as a respectful title meaning master, lord, or sir. The plural aṣḥāb appears in the Qur'an for the companions of a person or place, as in aṣḥāb al-kahf, "the companions of the cave." South Asian forms include Urdu sāhib and Hindi sāhab, and the word passed into English as sahib, the colonial-era term of address.
Sahib Name History & Origins
The word travelled into South Asia through Arabic and Persian literary and administrative culture. In the Persianate courts of India it worked as an honorific that could follow a personal name or a title, and it survives in Indian official titles such as Khan Sahib. In Sikh usage Sahib is a respectful term attached to people and things of high standing, as in Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture, and Sahibzada, used for the sons of the Gurus.
Under British rule in India, sahib became the ordinary respectful address for a European man, and memsahib (from "ma'am" plus sahib) was coined for a European woman; English kept the word mainly in that colonial sense. The name also appears in Turkic and Central Asian usage, including the Crimean Tatar khans Sahib I Giray in the sixteenth century and Sahib II Giray in the eighteenth.
As a personal name, Sahib is given to boys in Pakistan and in South Asian Muslim and Punjabi Sikh families, either on its own or as the first element in compounds that use it as a name element. This overlaps with the honorific use of the same word, so the two are not always easy to separate in older records.
