What Does the Name Sahana Mean?

Sahana means "patience" or "forbearance" and comes from Sanskrit. It is built on the verb root sah, "to bear, endure, withstand," with the suffix -ana, which forms a noun of action: sahana (सहन) is literally "the act of enduring." Sanskrit also uses sahana as an adjective meaning "enduring" or "patient." The same root appears in the everyday Hindi verb सहना (sahanā), "to bear, endure," and in sahya, "bearable," the first element of Sahyādri, a name for the Western Ghats.

The name is not related to saha, "together," even though the two sound alike. Saha appears in the peace invocation saha nāv avatu ("may he protect us both"), traditionally attached to the Taittirīya Upaniṣad; that phrase is saha plus nau, "us," and not a form of sahana.

Sahana Name History & Origins

Sahana is a personal name taken from Sanskrit, the classical language of Hindu liturgy and literature, and it is used mainly in South Asia. It appears as a girl's name in the South Indian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala, and it is also used in Sri Lanka and Nepal. Because it is an ordinary Sanskrit noun rather than a name attached to a particular legend, speakers of modern Indian languages hear in it the everyday words for bearing and putting up with hardship, and it circulates much like other Sanskrit nouns that have become given names.

In South Indian classical music, Sahana is also the name of a well-known rāga, a derived (janya) melody usually classified under the 29th melakarta, Dheerasankarabharanam. Rāga names in the Carnatic tradition are frequently Sanskrit words, and this one follows that pattern. The musical term and the given name are best understood as two uses of the same word rather than one growing out of the other.
