What Does the Name Saelah Mean?

Saelah is a rare spelling of the Hebrew word-name Selah (סֶלָה), the term that appears repeatedly in the book of Psalms and three times in the book of Habakkuk. The Hebrew word itself has no agreed translation, so the name is normally described as having an uncertain meaning rather than one fixed sense.

The proposed explanations grow out of how the word is used in the text. It often stands at the close of a psalm verse, which has led to readings of it as a musical interlude or a pause for reflection, and the Septuagint's use of the Greek word diapsalma ("interlude") in its place supports that idea. Others link it to the Hebrew root salal, "to lift up," and take it as a call to exalt or to raise the voice. Because these remain proposals, common glosses such as "pause and reflect" or "praise" are customary interpretations, not literal translations.

The ae spelling is an English respelling of the same sound; the form used in Bible translations is Selah. Similar-looking names are not automatically related: Hebrew Sela (סֶלַע) means "rock" and is a place name, and Old Norse poetry uses sæla for "bliss" or "good fortune." Neither is evidence for the origin of Saelah.

Saelah Name History & Origins

The word behind the name is ancient Hebrew, but the history of the name is largely the history of how that word was carried into other languages. In the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures made in the last centuries BCE, selah was usually replaced by the loanword diapsalma, and the Latin Vulgate repeated diapsalma in many psalms. English translators took a different route and left the word in its Hebrew form, which is why the King James Bible of 1611 prints Selah without translating it.

Because the word survived in English Bibles as an untranslated term, it remained available as a written form from which a given name could be taken; Selah, and the respelled Saelah, belong to that same word rather than to a separate naming tradition. The added a preserves the sound while producing a spelling that differs from the one readers see in Bible translations.

Jewish tradition reads the word as part of the psalm text and leaves it untranslated in the Hebrew Bible and in the liturgy, and no single explanation of its function has gained general acceptance. As a personal name, the word is used mainly in English-speaking countries, where the spelling varies; Saelah is one of the less common of those spellings.
