What Does the Name Sade Mean?

Sade is a Yoruba name from southwestern Nigeria, most often a short form of longer Yoruba names such as Fọláṣadé and Oluṣadé. Those longer names are built on the element adé, "crown," and the element ṣadé, understood as a form of ṣe adé, "to make or become a crown." The short form therefore carries the sense "crowned" or "has been crowned."

Customary glosses render Fọláṣadé as "honor confers a crown" or "wealth has crowned me," with the first part related to ọlá, "honor, wealth." Oluṣadé uses Olu-, referring to God or a chief, and is usually given as "God has crowned me." These translations are traditional interpretations of sentence-like names rather than exact word-for-word equivalents.

Yoruba names are regularly shortened in everyday speech, so the ṣadé element of the longer forms stands on its own as a given name. Sade is not related to the French surname of the Marquis de Sade, which comes from a place name in Provence, and it should not be confused with similar-looking names of other origins.

Sade Name History & Origins

Yoruba naming is phrase- or sentence-based: a name such as Fọláṣadé or Oluṣadé makes a statement about the child or the family, while a shorter form serves for daily use. Sade, written Ṣadé in Yoruba, is one of those everyday short forms, and the long form is generally kept for formal occasions. In Yoruba spelling the letter ṣ stands for the "sh" sound, which is why the name also appears in English as Shade.

The name became familiar to audiences outside West Africa through the Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu, born Helen Folasade Adu in Ibadan in 1959, who performs under the short form of her name.

Yoruba naming practices were carried to the Americas during the transatlantic slave trade and survive in religious and family traditions in Cuba and Brazil, where Yoruba-derived names appear in modified forms. Sade itself is chiefly encountered in Nigeria and among Yoruba communities abroad, and the name is documented far more widely in West Africa than elsewhere.
