What Does the Name Sabas Mean?

Sabas is a male given name meaning "old man" or "elder." Its immediate source is Greek Sabas (Σάββας), a name used by early Christians. The Greek form is generally traced to Aramaic sabba, "old man, elder," a word related to Hebrew saba, "grandfather." The literal sense is an age term; "elder" reflects its use as a respectful word for an older man or senior monk. Sabas is not etymologically related to Sabina or Sebastian, despite the similar sounds.

Sabas Name History & Origins

The name is closely associated with Saint Sabas (439 - 532), a Cappadocian monk who became a major figure in Palestinian monasticism. After entering a monastery in Palestine, he spent years as a hermit in the Judean desert and later founded the Great Lavra, commonly called Mar Saba, in the Kidron Valley east of Bethlehem. The monastery became a center of Orthodox monastic life and is still occupied today. Sabas was also a defender of Chalcedonian orthodoxy and traveled to Constantinople to seek support against Monophysite bishops. His feast day is December 5.

The Greek form is sometimes transliterated Sabbas, and related forms include Greek Savvas, Russian Savva, and Serbian Sava. The name is used in Greek and other Eastern Christian communities, and the same spelling, Sabas, appears as a given name in Spanish-speaking countries.
