What Does the Name Roxas Mean?
Roxas is a surname of Spanish origin and an older-spelling variant of Rojas. Both forms go back to Old Spanish roxo (modern Spanish rojo), meaning "red," which descends from Latin russus, also "red." The literal sense is therefore a color word. As a surname it is usually understood as a descriptive byname for someone with red hair or a ruddy complexion, or as a habitational name for a person from a place called Rojas. The x is an archaic spelling of a sound once pronounced like "sh" in Spanish and later written j, which is why Roxas and Rojas represent the same name in old and modern dress rather than two unrelated names.
Roxas Name History & Origins
Surnames built on the roxo/rojo root are recorded in medieval Iberia, and Rojas is the standard modern Spanish form. The spelling Roxas preserves the older orthography, in which x stood for the "sh" sound that Spanish later respelled with j. This makes Roxas a spelling that reflects an earlier stage of the language rather than a separate etymology.
The name reached the Philippines through Spanish colonial rule, and it is best known there as a surname of the Roxas family of Capiz. Manuel Roxas (1892 - 1948), who served as the first president of the independent Third Philippine Republic beginning in 1946, is the most prominent bearer. Places named Roxas in the Philippines, including Roxas City in Capiz and the town of Roxas in Isabela, take their name from him or from the family. The same surname is also used for a character in the Kingdom Hearts video game series; that is a modern fictional use of an existing Spanish surname, not the origin of the name.
