What Does the Name Rook Mean?
Rook is an English name meaning "rook," a crow-like bird of the genus Corvus. The word comes from Old English hrōc, which named the bird, and it became Middle English rook or roke. As a personal name, Rook is a transferred use of the English surname. The surname is usually explained as a nickname from the bird - perhaps given to someone with dark hair or a dark complexion - or as a topographic name for someone who lived near a rookery. The literal sense is the bird itself; the dark-color or place associations are customary interpretations of why the nickname was applied, not separate meanings of the word. The chess piece called a rook is a different word, from Old French roc and Arabic rukhkh, and is not the source of the personal name.
Rook Name History & Origins
The bird name hrōc is recorded in Old English, and the Middle English form rook continued to name the bird. In medieval England, bird names were commonly used as surnames, and Rook appears as an English surname with variants such as Rooke and Rooks. A family called Rook might have been named for a resemblance to the bird, for a habit of living near a rookery, or for a place where rooks gathered; surname dictionaries often list both nickname and topographic explanations, and the exact origin of any single family is uncertain.
Rook is uncommon as a given name. In English-speaking countries it belongs to the broad category of surnames used as first names. It is much more common as a surname and as the ordinary word for the bird than as a given name. The separate chess term rook may make the name familiar, but the chess word has its own history and does not explain the surname or the given name.
