What Does the Name Rood Mean?

Rood is an English word-name meaning "cross" or "crucifix," from Old English rōd. In Old English, rōd was the ordinary word for the cross, and also for a gallows or a plain pole; it belongs to a Germanic set of words for a straight beam or rod, which also produced Old High German ruota, the ancestor of German Rute ("rod"), and Old Norse róða ("cross"). The deeper Germanic root is not fully settled, but the "cross, pole" sense is consistent across the older forms.

As a family name, Rood has a second, unrelated source. Dutch Rood, and the fuller form de Roode, comes from Middle Dutch rood, "red," and began as a nickname for a person with red hair or a ruddy face, much like German Roth and the English names Read and Reed. The English and Dutch names look alike but are not related. The English surname is generally a topographic name for someone who lived by a cross or crucifix, or a habitational name from a place named with the word.

Rood Name History & Origins

The Old English noun rōd is the source both of the modern word and of the English surname. Its best-known literary appearance is The Dream of the Rood, an Old English poem preserved in the Vercelli Book, in which the cross itself speaks; the poem uses the word in its plain sense of the cross of Christ, and it is a literary use of an older everyday word rather than the origin of the term.

After the Norman Conquest, cross (from Latin crux) gradually replaced rood in ordinary speech, but rood lived on in church vocabulary. In medieval churches the rood was the large crucifix, often flanked by figures of Mary and John, set above the screen between the nave and the chancel; the screen, the loft above it, and the stair leading to the loft all took their names from it - rood screen, rood loft, rood stair.

The word also carried a measure sense: a rood was a unit of land equal to a quarter of an acre, tied to the linear rod or pole, and that sense of a boundary or strip of land may lie behind some uses of the surname. English family names formed from rood appear in the medieval period and continue in use.

The Dutch surname Rood followed its own path from the color word, and Dutch families who carried it to North America sometimes had it spelled or pronounced in English ways. As a given name, Rood is rare in both English and Dutch, and where it occurs it is generally a transferred use of the surname rather than a long-established personal name.
