What Does the Name Ronin Mean?

Ronin is an English given name borrowed from the Japanese word rōnin (浪人), which means "masterless samurai" - a warrior with no lord to serve. The word is built from rō, "wave," and nin, "person," so its literal sense is "wave person," someone adrift or wandering. The "masterless samurai" meaning is the customary sense of the word, not a separate root.

English spelling usually drops the macron of rōnin, giving Ronin. The word is not a traditional Japanese personal name; it is a common noun in Japanese, and its use as a name is an English-language development.

Ronin Name History & Origins

The term belongs to the feudal history of Japan. Samurai served hereditary lords, and a warrior whose lord died or who was dismissed from service lost his position and income. Such a man became a rōnin, often hiring out his sword or turning to banditry. The wars of the Sengoku period and the rigid order of the Tokugawa shogunate both produced large numbers of masterless warriors.

The best-known episode is the revenge carried out in 1701 - 1703 by the forty-seven rōnin of Ako, who avenged their lord and were then ordered to take their own lives. The story circulated in chronicles and became the basis of the puppet and kabuki play Chūshingura ("The Treasury of Loyal Retainers"), which was later retold in films and novels.

After the Meiji Restoration of 1868 and the end of the samurai class, the word gained a new everyday use in Japanese: a student who has finished secondary school but has not yet passed a university entrance exam and is studying for another attempt.

As a personal name in English, Ronin is a recent borrowing, found mainly in the United States and other English-speaking countries. It is unrelated to the Irish name Ronan, which has a separate origin in the Irish language.
