What Does the Name Romani Mean?

Romani is a feminine given name whose most transparent origin is Latin: it is a feminine form of Romanus, the Latin adjective and family name meaning "a Roman" or "of Rome." Its literal sense is therefore "Roman woman." Romanus derives from Roma, the Latin name of the city of Rome. The same root produced the feminine names Romana (used in Italian, Spanish, and Polish) and Romaine (French), and the -i ending of Romani corresponds to feminine forms of Greek type, such as Eleni. The origin of the city name Roma is itself uncertain: ancient writers connected it with a Greek word for strength, and an Etruscan source has also been proposed. The word Romani used for the language and people of the Roma has a separate history and does not come from Latin Romanus.

Romani Name History & Origins

Romanus was a common Roman cognomen, and saints who bore it helped the name survive the Middle Ages, among them Romanus of Caesarea, a martyr of the early fourth century, and Romanus of Condat, a fifth-century monk who founded monasteries in the Jura mountains. Feminine forms such as Romana and Romaine developed alongside these. In the Greek-speaking eastern Mediterranean, Rhōmanos and its plural Rhōmanoi ("Romans") became the standard self-designation of the Greek subjects of the Byzantine Empire, who continued to call themselves Rhomaioi long after the imperial capital moved to Constantinople. In Italy, Romani is far more common today as a surname, the plural of Romano, than as a personal name. The given name is also used in South Asia, where the Latin root does not explain it and no clear alternative derivation has been established. As a word for the Roma people and their language, English uses Romani, often spelled Romany - a spelling associated with the nineteenth-century English writer George Borrow's books about the Roma. The Roma endonym rom is usually traced to Sanskrit ḍoma, a term for a musician or low-caste performer, though that etymology is disputed.
