What Does the Name Rollin Mean?
Rollin is a French diminutive of Roul, a French form of Rollo, and ultimately comes from the Old Norse name Hrólfr, meaning "famous wolf." Hrólfr joins hróðr, "fame," and ulfr, "wolf." The French ending -in makes Rollin a diminutive, so its literal sense is closer to "little Roul"; the "famous wolf" meaning belongs to the older name from which it derives. Despite the similar sound, Rollin is not a form of Roland, which has a separate Germanic origin.
Rollin Name History & Origins
The name behind Rollin is the Old Norse personal name Hrólfr, borne by the Viking leader known in Latin and French sources as Rollo. In the early tenth century he settled in northern France, and his name became established in Norman and French usage as Roul or Rolle. The diminutive Rollin developed in French from that name and is also found as a French surname; Charles Rollin (1661 - 1741), the French historian and educational writer, is a notable bearer of the surname. English use of Rollin as a given name comes from the surname.
