What Does the Name Rip Mean?
Rip is an English given name best understood as a short form of Ripley, a surname and place name. Ripley goes back to the Old English place-name elements Hrypan, the genitive of the personal name Hrypa, and leah, meaning "wood" or "clearing." The literal sense is "Hrypa's clearing" or "Hrypa's wood." The personal name Hrypa is known mainly from place names, and its own meaning is uncertain. Rip is identical in form to the English verb rip ("to tear"), but the given name is usually explained as a clipped form of Ripley rather than as a use of that verb. It is also unrelated to the abbreviation R.I.P. (requiescat in pace).
Rip Name History & Origins
The place name Ripley is found in several English counties, including Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Surrey, and Hampshire. From these places came the surname Ripley, and from that surname came the short form Rip. The shortening is a nickname-style process rather than a regular sound change. As a given name, Rip is used in the English-speaking world, often as an informal name or a short form rather than a formal birth name. Washington Irving's 1819 story "Rip Van Winkle" is a famous literary use of the name, not its origin. Later fictional characters include the comic-strip detective Rip Kirby and the DC Comics adventurer Rip Hunter. In real life, the name has been borne by entertainers such as Rip Torn and Rip Taylor, usually as a nickname.
