What Does the Name Remy Mean?

Remy is a French name meaning "oarsman" or "rower." It comes from the Latin name Remigius, built on remex (genitive remigis), meaning "rower, oarsman," which in turn derives from remus, "oar." The same Latin root gives the modern scientific word remiges, a bird's flight feathers, a later technical use rather than part of the name's original sense. The standard French spellings are Rémi and Rémy; English forms usually drop the accent. Despite the similar sound, the name has no established connection to Remus, the figure in the Roman founding legend.

Remy Name History & Origins

The name rests on the Latin Remigius, recorded in late Roman and early medieval times. Its most influential bearer was Saint Remigius (c. 437 - 533), bishop of Reims, who baptized Clovis I, king of the Franks, an event traditionally dated to 496. Because of his standing in Frankish Gaul, the name took hold in the Reims region and spread through France as Rémi and Rémy. Several French communes are called Saint-Rémy after him, and his feast on January 13 kept the name in church calendars.

In medieval Latin documents the name appears as Remigius, while vernacular French favored the shortened Remi/Rémi. It crossed into England with the Normans: Remigius de Fécamp, a monk from Normandy who became the first bishop of Lincoln and died in 1092, is a documented bearer. In England the name stayed uncommon and largely clerical, but it survived as a surname in France and later in England and North America, where the surname Remy is generally patronymic, taken from the given name. In the United States the name is also spelled Remi, and it appears as the rat chef in the 2007 animated film Ratatouille, a modern cultural use rather than a historical stage in the name's development.
