What Does the Name Raza Mean?

Raza is an Urdu form of the Arabic name Riḍā, which means "contentment," "satisfaction," or "approval." It comes from the Arabic noun riḍā (رضا), a word for being pleased or satisfied and, by extension, for approval or consent.

In Islamic usage, riḍā can also refer to God's approval or good pleasure; this is a customary religious sense rather than a separate etymology. The Arabic form is usually transliterated Rida, while Reza reflects Persian pronunciation and Raza reflects Urdu pronunciation, in which the Arabic letter ḍād is pronounced as z.

Raza Name History & Origins

The name goes back to the Arabic noun riḍā, which was adopted as a personal name in Muslim societies. Its spelling and pronunciation changed as it passed into other languages: Arabic Rida, Persian Reza, Urdu Raza, and Turkish Rıza. These are forms of the same Arabic word, not separate names with independent origins.

The Persian form Reza is closely associated with ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā (d. 818), the eighth Imam in Twelver Shiʿi Islam, whose shrine is in Mashhad. Al-Riḍā is his title, rendered as Reza in Persian. In South Asia, Raza is the common Urdu form and is used as a given name and surname.
