What Does the Name Quran Mean?
Quran is the Arabic name of the Islamic scripture, and its established meaning is "recitation" or "reading." It comes from Arabic, from the root q-r-ʾ - the verb qaraʾa, "he read, he recited" - in the verbal-noun form qurʾān. Arabic grammar treats it alongside qirāʾa, "a reading, a recitation."
A minority of Western scholars have connected the form to Syriac qeryānā, "scriptural reading, lection," a word used by Aramaic-speaking Christians for a passage read aloud in worship. The traditional Arabic derivation from qaraʾa is the usual explanation, and the two accounts are not fully resolved.
Quran Name History & Origins
The Arabic word qurʾān is attested before the rise of Islam, and in the scripture itself it refers to the recitations delivered by the Prophet Muhammad in western Arabia in the seventh century. From that usage it became the fixed title of the collected text, al-Qurʾān, "the recitation," with the definite article built into the Arabic form. Muslim tradition holds that the revelations came over roughly twenty years and were gathered into a written codex under the early caliphs.
European languages took the word through medieval Latin and other intermediaries as Alcoranus or Koran; the spellings Quran and Qur'an reflect later, more literal transliteration of the Arabic. As a given name, Quran is used in some Muslim communities, where personal names are often taken directly from religious vocabulary. It is far less common as a personal name than names such as Muhammad or Abdullah.
