What Does the Name Purity Mean?
Purity is an English word name meaning "the quality of being pure" or "chastity." It comes from the English noun purity, which entered Middle English from Old French pureté and ultimately from Latin puritas, a noun formed from purus, meaning "pure, clean, unmixed."
The literal sense is the state of being pure. In Christian use the word often carries a moral or spiritual sense, especially sexual chastity, and that religious meaning is the background for its use as a given name. As a personal name, Purity is a virtue name: an abstract noun used directly as a name rather than a shortened or altered form of a saint's name.
Purity Name History & Origins
Purity belongs to the tradition of English virtue names, which became a recognizable naming fashion among Puritans in England and colonial New England in the 16th and 17th centuries. Puritan parents gave children names such as Prudence, Patience, Charity, Chastity, Temperance, and Faith, using moral qualities as reminders or statements of religious commitment. Purity fits this pattern.
Its use as a personal name is tied to the English word rather than to a separate medieval name form. The word's earlier history is Latin puritas, which passed into Old French as pureté and then into Middle English as purite or purity. In later English-speaking use, Purity has appeared as a given name, sometimes chosen for its literal meaning and sometimes as a religious statement.
