What Does the Name Pola Mean?

Pola is a feminine given name with two separate derivations. In Polish, it is a pet form of Apolonia, the Polish form of Apollonia. Apollonia comes from the Greek feminine name Apollonia, built on Apollonios, which means "of Apollo" or "belonging to Apollo." The origin of the god's name Apollo is uncertain; ancient Greek writers sometimes linked it to apollymi, "to destroy," but that explanation is not settled. In Spanish, Pola is also a short form of Paula, the feminine of Latin Paulus, literally "small" or "little" and often interpreted in Christian use as "humble." The two derivations are independent: one is Greek and refers to Apollo, while the other is Latin and refers to smallness.

Pola Name History & Origins

The name Apollonia was borne by Saint Apollonia, a Christian martyr of Alexandria who died in 249; her cult was widespread in medieval Europe. In Poland, Apolonia became a traditional given name, and Pola developed as a familiar short form of it. In Spanish-speaking countries, Pola is also used as a diminutive of Paula, a name associated with Saint Paula, the fourth-century Roman noblewoman who worked with Saint Jerome in Bethlehem. As a stand-alone given name, Pola is known from the Polish-born actress Pola Negri (1897 - 1987), born Barbara Apolonia Chałupiec, who took her stage name from a shortened form of her middle name. The name is used in Poland and in Spanish-speaking regions; its Polish and Spanish routes are separate even when the written form is the same.
