What Does the Name Pluto Mean?

Pluto is the Latin form of the Greek name Ploutōn (Πλούτων), a title for the ruler of the underworld. The Greek name is tied to ploutos, meaning "wealth" or "riches," so it is generally understood as "the wealthy one" or "the giver of wealth."

The literal sense refers to material wealth. The customary interpretation goes further: the underworld was seen as the source of the wealth that comes from the earth, including mineral ores and the harvest. The name worked as a euphemism, since the god's direct name, Hades, was avoided out of fear.

Pluto Name History & Origins

In Greek religion, Ploutōn was used as an alternate name for Hades, the god of the dead and the underworld. It appears in classical Greek writing; Plato discusses it in the Cratylus, explaining the title as a reference to wealth coming from beneath the earth. Greek sources also knew Ploutos, a separate figure personifying wealth, who was sometimes linked with the underworld god.

Roman religion took the figure over as Pluto and identified him with Dis Pater and Orcus, gods of the underworld and the dead. The Latin name Pluto appears in Roman poetry, including Ovid's Metamorphoses.

As a personal name, Pluto has seen little use in English-speaking countries. The dwarf planet discovered in 1930 was named Pluto after a suggestion by Venetia Burney, an English schoolgirl. The name also became widely familiar through the Disney dog Pluto, who first appeared in 1930.
