What Does the Name Pierson Mean?
Pierson is an English surname used as a given name, and it means "son of Piers." The ending -son is the standard English patronymic suffix, indicating a father's name. Piers is a Middle English form of the name Peter, taken into English from Old French Piers, which comes from Latin Petrus and Greek Petros. Those forms go back to Aramaic kephas, meaning "rock" or "stone," the nickname given to the apostle Simon. So the literal sense of Pierson is "son of Piers," and its ultimate root meaning is "rock." The spelling Pearson is a close variant of the same patronymic.
Pierson Name History & Origins
Patronymic surnames formed with -son were especially common in northern England and lowland Scotland in the Middle Ages, where a man might be recorded as the son of a locally known Piers or Pierce. The personal name Piers was widespread in medieval England as the everyday form of Peter, a name carried by saints and by the apostle Simon Peter, which kept it in regular use. From such bynames the hereditary surname Pierson developed in several spellings, including Pearson and Peirson, and it appears in English records as a family name long before it was used as a first name.
As a given name, Pierson belongs to the broad category of English surnames transferred to first-name use. This practice grew in the English-speaking world, and particularly in the United States, where family surnames were increasingly given to children as first names. The surname ancestry is shared with the names Piers and Pierce, though those are usually treated as separate given names that entered use through the same root rather than as shortened forms of Pierson.
