What Does the Name Pepper Mean?
Pepper is an English word name taken directly from the spice. The English word descends from Middle English peper and Old English pipor, which came from Latin piper, borrowed in turn from Greek peperi. The Greek form is usually traced to Sanskrit pippalī, the name for long pepper (Piper longum), a vine of southern Asia. That Sanskrit word referred to long pepper specifically; black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a separate species of the same genus, and its names in European languages come from the same word family.
The literal sense of the name is therefore just the spice. Unlike names that descend from an older personal name with its own meaning, Pepper has no separate ancestor-name behind it - the vocabulary word is the whole story.
Pepper Name History & Origins
The word is old, but Pepper as a first name is comparatively recent and belongs to the English habit of using ordinary words - plants, spices, and foods - as given names. Before it was a first name, Pepper was established as an English surname. In medieval England a pepperer was a dealer in spices, and surnames taken from trades became common in the later Middle Ages; Pepper most likely began as an occupational surname for a spicer or for someone who handled pepper, though a surname of this spelling can also arise in other ways.
As a given name, Pepper has been used for both boys and girls and has long served as a nickname, especially in American sports, where it was attached to players such as the baseball outfielder John Leonard "Pepper" Martin. In the later twentieth century it appeared more often as a girl's name in the English-speaking world, sometimes as a short form of names beginning with similar sounds, sometimes simply as the word name. The Marvel Comics character Pepper Potts, introduced in the 1960s, is a well-known later use of the name in fiction rather than evidence of its origin.
The name has not carried a single conventional meaning beyond the spice itself, and I have no reliable documentation of its earliest appearance as a first name.
