What Does the Name Ozlem Mean?
Özlem is a Turkish name meaning "longing," "yearning," or "missing someone or something." It is the noun form of the Turkish verb özlemek, "to long for, to miss." The word is built from Turkish öz, meaning "self," "essence," or "one's own," with the verb-forming suffix -le- and the noun-forming suffix -m. This makes it a native Turkish formation rather than a borrowing from Arabic or Persian. The literal sense is close to "a longing"; the everyday, customary meaning is the emotional one of missing an absent person, place, or time.
Ozlem Name History & Origins
Özlem belongs to the layer of Turkish given names taken from ordinary Turkish vocabulary. For centuries, most personal names in Anatolia and the Ottoman lands came from Arabic and Persian by way of Islam - names such as Mehmet, Ahmet, Ayşe, and Fatma. From the late Ottoman period onward, and especially after the Turkish Republic's language and surname reforms of the 1930s, parents increasingly chose names formed from Turkish roots instead. Özlem, made from the native word for longing, is part of that group, and it shares its öz element with other Turkish names such as Özge and Özgür. It is used as a girl's name in Turkey and among Turkish communities abroad, including in Germany and Bulgaria, where Turkish-speaking populations have long been established.
