What Does the Name Ovi Mean?

Ovi is mainly a Romanian short form of Ovidiu, the Romanian form of the Latin name Ovidius. That Latin name belonged to the poet Publius Ovidius Naso, and its origin is not settled. Explanations from Latin ovis ("sheep") or ovum ("egg") have been proposed, but Ovidius is generally treated as a name of uncertain, possibly non-Latin (Italic or Etruscan) background. Because Ovi is a clipped form of Ovidiu, it carries no separate meaning of its own.

The same shortening appears in other languages with the same Latin root: Ovidio in Italian and Spanish, Ovide in French, Ovid in English, and Ovidi in Catalan, each with its own short form in speech. Spellings that look alike are not necessarily related. In Tamil, the feminine name Oviya comes from ōviyam, "picture, painting," and has nothing to do with the Latin name. In sports writing, the hockey player Alexander Ovechkin is nicknamed Ovi because it is taken from his surname, not from Ovidiu.

Ovi Name History & Origins

Ovi belongs to the Romanian habit of clipping longer given names in everyday speech. Romanian descended from the Latin spoken in the Balkans and along the lower Danube, and Latin-derived personal names were deliberately promoted by Romanian scholars and writers in the nineteenth century, when the Transylvanian School and later figures treated Rome as the source of Romanian identity. Names such as Ovidiu, Traian, Aurel, and Virgil entered ordinary use in this period, and Ovidiu became common enough in Romania and Moldova to produce the familiar short form Ovi.

The poet Ovidius Naso, whose name lies behind Ovidiu, was exiled to Tomis on the Black Sea, the site of present-day Constanța in Romania, a connection Romanians have long marked. The short form Ovi is also familiar abroad through the Romanian-Norwegian musician Ovidiu Cernăuțeanu, who performs as Ovi and represented Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest with Paula Seling in 2010 and 2014. In Hungarian, ovi is a colloquial word for kindergarten, shortened from óvoda, and is not a personal name, so the same letters carry unrelated senses in different languages.
