What Does the Name Ottilie Mean?

Ottilie is a feminine name of Germanic origin. It goes back to the Germanic element aud- (also written od-), meaning "wealth" or "riches," the same root found in the masculine names Otto and Odo. The name is recorded in medieval Latin as Odilia and survives in French as Odile. Ottilie is the German and French form of that name, written with a final -ie. The second part of the name is not securely explained: the -il- may be a diminutive suffix, suggesting a sense like "little wealthy one," while some older accounts instead read a second element meaning "battle," giving a customary sense such as "prosperity in battle." Only the "wealth" root is well established.

Ottilie Name History & Origins

The name is best known through Saint Odilia (also called Odile), a seventh- and eighth-century abbess of Hohenburg in Alsace, a region now part of France. According to her traditional life, she was born blind to the Alsatian duke Adalric and was healed at her baptism; she later led the monastery at Hohenburg, on the mountain now called Mont Sainte-Odile. She was venerated as a patron of Alsace and of people with eye ailments, with a feast day of December 13. Her cult carried the name through German- and French-speaking regions in the forms Odilia, Ottilia, Odile, and Ottilie.

Ottilie became a familiar given name in German-speaking lands and in France, and it has also been used in Britain and the United States. It appears in German literature as the name of a central character in Goethe's novel Elective Affinities (Die Wahlverwandtschaften, 1809); that literary use is later than the medieval saint's name and did not create it.

Related feminine forms include Odile and Odilia in French, Ottilia in German and Latin, and Otilia in Spanish and Romanian, all sharing the same Germanic root. The English name Ottoline is a further elaboration of this group.
