What Does the Name Olga Mean?

Olga means "holy" or "blessed" and comes from Old Norse. Its source is the feminine name Helga, formed from an adjective related to Old Norse heilagr, meaning "holy, sacred." The matching masculine name was Helgi, and the same root lies behind the East Slavic masculine name Oleg (Олег).

The East Slavic form Ol'ga (Ольга) is a Slavic reshaping of Scandinavian Helga: the initial h was dropped and a vowel was added at the front, giving Ol- plus the ending -ga. This is why the Russian name begins with a vowel while its Norse ancestor begins with h. The meaning "holy" is the literal etymological sense; it is not a description of any particular person who has borne the name.

Olga Name History & Origins

The name traveled from Scandinavia to Eastern Europe with the Varangians, Norse traders and warriors who settled along the river routes of what became Kievan Rus'. In Scandinavian use the name remained Helga, a common woman's name recorded on runic memorial stones. In the Slavic lands it took the form Ol'ga, and it was this form that became widely established.

The best-known early bearer was Olga of Kiev, widow of Prince Igor of Kiev, who ruled as regent for their son Sviatoslav in the middle of the tenth century. She traveled to Constantinople and was baptized there, taking the Christian name Helena. She is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is remembered as one of the earliest Christian figures of the Rus' church. Her example and the later Christianization of Rus' helped fix the name in Russian and Ukrainian use; the Ukrainian form is Olha.

From the East Slavic lands the name spread to other Orthodox and Slavic-speaking peoples, appearing as Olga in Bulgarian, Serbian, Czech, and Polish, and in the Baltic and Nordic regions as well, where it sits alongside the older Helga. Russian has produced many pet forms, among them Olya, Olenka, and Olka, which are used as independent given names in some families.

In the English-speaking world the name is mostly associated with immigrants from Russia, Ukraine, and other parts of Eastern Europe and with their descendants from the late nineteenth century onward, rather than with a long native English tradition.
