What Does the Name Novalee Mean?
Novalee is a modern English name, used mainly in the United States, and it is most often understood as a blend of the element Nova with Lee or Leigh. Nova goes back to the Latin novus, "new," whose feminine form nova also names a star that suddenly brightens, from the phrase stella nova, "new star." Lee derives from the Old English lēah, meaning "woodland clearing" or "meadow," and is familiar both as an English surname and as a given name. Read as its two parts, the name yields "new" plus "meadow." Because Novalee is a combination rather than a single historical name with one source, its meaning is the sum of those parts, not a translation from one language.
Novalee Name History & Origins
The two elements of Novalee have long, separate histories, while the combination itself belongs to recent English naming. Old English lēah survives in many English place names, including Leigh and Lee, and the surname Lee grew out of such places. Lee was long used as a boy's given name and, from the nineteenth century on, increasingly as a girl's name; the spelling Leigh and the ending -lee became common in twentieth-century American girls' names. Nova entered English naming both from the Latin word for "new" and from its astronomical sense.
Novalee joins these two elements in the pattern common to modern American coinages, in which a short first element is followed by -lee, -leigh, or a similar ending; many names of this shape began as two-part given names written together. A well-known literary use is Novalee Nation, the central character of Billie Letts's 1995 novel Where the Heart Is and its 2000 film adaptation. That association is a literary use of the name, not evidence of where or when the combination first appeared.
