What Does the Name Nosson Mean?
Nosson is a Yiddish form of the Hebrew name Natan (נָתָן), which comes from the verb root n-t-n, meaning "to give." The literal sense of the name is "he gave," and it is also commonly rendered as "gift" or "given." The name does not have a separate etymology of its own: the Yiddish reading of the Hebrew vowels produced Nossen, spelled Nosson in English, while the Hebrew form Natan appears in English as Nathan.
Nosson Name History & Origins
The Hebrew name Natan is biblical. Its best-known bearer is the prophet Nathan at the court of King David, who according to the books of Samuel confronted David over Bathsheba and later backed Solomon's succession to the throne. In Ashkenazi communities the biblical name was read with Yiddish pronunciation, and Natan became Nossen; when Ashkenazi Jews settled in English-speaking countries, that Yiddish form was frequently written Nosson. Spellings such as Nossen and Nossin also appear.
Nosson has stayed largely an Ashkenazi Jewish name, used alongside the English Nathan, and the same person may be called Nosson in religious settings and Nathan outside them. Among its bearers are Rabbi Nosson of Breslov (1780 - 1844), the leading disciple of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov and the compiler of his teachings; Nosson Tzvi Finkel (1849 - 1927), known as the Alter of Slabodka, a prominent figure in the Musar movement; and his namesake Nosson Tzvi Finkel (1943 - 2011), who headed the Mir yeshiva in Jerusalem.
