What Does the Name Noor Mean?

Noor is an Arabic name meaning "light." It comes from the Arabic noun nūr (نور), built on a root, n-w-r, that carries the sense of light, illumination, and radiance. The word is central to Islamic religious language: the twenty-fourth chapter of the Quran is Sūrat an-Nūr, "The Chapter of Light," and its thirty-fifth verse is known as the Light Verse. An-Nūr, "The Light," is also one of the names of God in Islamic tradition.

The same Arabic word appears under several spellings as it passes into other languages: Nur in Turkish, Persian, and Urdu usage, Nour in French-influenced spelling, and the English form Noor. These are variants of one name rather than separate origins.

The Dutch and Flemish use of Noor is a different case. There the name is generally explained as a short form of Eleonora, so its resemblance to the Arabic name is coincidental.

Noor Name History & Origins

The Arabic word nūr was in ordinary and religious use long before it became a common personal name, and that religious weight shaped the name's later history. Medieval Muslims formed compound names and titles with it, among them Nūr al-Dīn, "Light of the Faith," the title of the Zengid ruler Nur ad-Din (1118 - 1174), and the name of the Mughal empress Nur Jahan (1577 - 1645), "Light of the World." Such compounds were used from the Middle East and North Africa to South Asia.

As a stand-alone given name it traveled with Islam and with Arabic as a language of religion and administration, taking the form Nur in Turkish-, Persian-, and Urdu-speaking regions and remaining Noor or Nour in Arabic-speaking countries. It is given to both women and men.

Among modern bearers, Queen Noor of Jordan, born Lisa Najeeb Halaby, took the name when she married King Hussein in 1978, and Noor Inayat Khan (1914 - 1944) carried the compound name Noor-un-Nisa.
