What Does the Name Nollie Mean?

Nollie is an English pet form of Noll, a long-standing nickname for Oliver, with the familiar diminutive ending -ie. Its customary meaning therefore follows Oliver's: "olive tree," from Old French olivier and Latin oliva, the olive. That derivation is not secure. A competing explanation traces Oliver to a Germanic name built from elements meaning "elf" and "army," and sometimes to Old Norse Áleifr; no single account has been generally accepted. Because Nollie takes its meaning only through Oliver, it is best described as an olive-tree name with that caveat attached.

Nollie Name History & Origins

Noll, the base of the name, was in use in England by the 1500s as a short form of Oliver. It is remembered in the mocking nickname "Old Noll" that Royalist writers applied to Oliver Cromwell in the 1600s. As with other English short names, adding the pet suffix -ie produced Nollie, a form that could be applied to a child of either sex but in modern use is given mostly to girls.

Because Noll and Nollie are informal forms, they were usually not entered as the name of record in earlier registers, and bearers of the nickname generally appear under Oliver. The diminutive has survived chiefly as an affectionate nickname and, more recently, as an independent given name, and it has never been as widely used as Oliver itself. In present-day English-speaking countries it remains uncommon.

Separately, nollie is a skateboarding term for a trick in which the board is popped off its nose. That word is a twentieth-century blend of nose and ollie and has no connection to the personal name.
