What Does the Name Nikodem Mean?
Nikodem is the Polish and Czech form of the name known in English as Nicodemus. It goes back to the Greek Nikodēmos, a compound of nikē, "victory," and dēmos, "the people." The literal sense is "victory of the people," often rendered as "conqueror of the people" or "victorious among the people."
The Hebrew name Nakdimon, used in the Talmud for the figure the Gospels call Nicodemus, has sometimes been explained as a Hebrew compound of naki, "innocent," and dam, "blood." That reading is usually treated as a later reinterpretation; many reference works see Nakdimon instead as a Hebrew reshaping of the Greek name, but the direction of borrowing between the two forms is not settled.
Nikodem Name History & Origins
The Greek name Nikodēmos is best known from the Gospel of John, where Nicodemus is a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin who comes to Jesus by night and later helps bury him. In late antiquity an apocryphal text, the Acts of Pilate or Gospel of Nicodemus, circulated under his name in Greek and Latin, and he was venerated as a saint in both the Western and Eastern churches. In the Roman calendar his feast is kept on August 3.
The name spread with Christianity into the Slavic-speaking world, where it was adopted in its Greek form. Polish uses Nikodem, Czech and Slovak Nikodém, and Hungarian Nikodém, while the Orthodox Slavs, including Russians, Serbs and Bulgarians, generally use Nikodim. Nikodem has been recorded in Poland since the Middle Ages. A later figure who carried the name in its Greek form was Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain, the 18th-century Athonite monk and compiler of the Philokalia.
In modern Polish culture the name is linked to the title character of Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz's 1932 satirical novel The Career of Nicodemus Dyzma.
