What Does the Name Nguyen Mean?
Nguyen is a Vietnamese family name, not a descriptive word with a Vietnamese lexical meaning. It is the Sino-Vietnamese reading of the Chinese surname written 阮 and pronounced Ruǎn in Mandarin. That Chinese surname is usually traced to the ancient state of Ruan (阮國), a small state of the Shang period in the area of present-day Gansu province. According to the traditional account, when the state was absorbed by a larger power, members of its ruling house took the state's name as their surname. The same character 阮 also names an old plucked string instrument, but that sense is separate from the surname's origin and is not its meaning as a family name.

Several events are traditionally linked to its spread. After the Trần family took power from the Lý dynasty in 1225, the regent Trần Thủ Độ is said to have ordered surviving members of the Lý family to change their surname to Nguyễn. Later, after the fall of the Trần dynasty in 1400 and of the Mạc dynasty in the 16th century, descendants of those houses are also said to have taken the surname Nguyễn to avoid reprisals. These accounts are traditional explanations rather than fully documented records of every family.
The surname's prominence is closely tied to the Nguyễn lords, who ruled southern Vietnam from the 16th to the 18th century, and to the Nguyễn dynasty, the last imperial dynasty, founded in 1802 by Nguyễn Phúc Ánh (Emperor Gia Long) and lasting until 1945. During that period the royal family used the compound surname Nguyễn Phúc, and the surname Nguyễn was also granted to others or adopted by them. As a result, Nguyễn is commonly cited as the most common surname in Vietnam and is carried by Vietnamese communities abroad as well.
